Inside the Studio (hardware, software, instruments) The virtual orchestra is based on individual recordings or 'samples' of each note in multiple articulations of every instrument in the Vienna Philharmonic. These samples are mapped along a MIDI key- -board, and can be played as desired. The computer records the keyboard performance, which can then be edited and refined as the composer sees fit. A measure of programming is also used in an effort to simulate the various nuances of each instrument. This is far from a replacement of an actual symphony orchestra, but it makes orchestral composition a reality considering the prohibitive expense of using the 'real thing'. Additionally, a variety of software and hardware devices are used to aid in the production of the music.
